Deal of a Lifetime
Imagine a wealthy, eccentric friend who approaches you with an extraordinary, non-negotiable offer. Every morning, without fail, he will deposit a fixed, generous sum of $86,400 into your private bank account. You can use this money for anything you wish: investments, charitable giving, personal indulgence, or pursuing your greatest dreams.
However, the gift comes with two unbreakable rules:
- You must spend it all by the end of each day. Any cent left over at midnight is forfeited. It cannot be saved, transferred, or hidden for later use.
- You cannot negotiate the amount. You will receive exactly $86,400, no more, no less. You will receive the exact same deposit again tomorrow and each subsequent day.
Now, think about how you would live your life. If you knew $86,400 was going to vanish every 24 hours, you would treat that account quite seriously. You would meticulously plan its use, ensuring every dollar was allocated to the highest possible value, purpose, or joy. You would never passively let thousands of dollars simply disappear while you were distracted. The idea of waking up to a clean slate, knowing you let $10,000 or more vanish the day before, would be painful.
Each day, we are gifted 86,400 seconds (the number of seconds in 24 hours). The rules remain the same: every single one of those seconds must be spent by midnight, and none can ever be recovered, saved, or carried over to the next day. The difference is, we often treat this invaluable resource with far less care than we would a bank deposit.
The challenge is to recognize the priceless, vanishing nature of those 86,400 moments each day and to dedicate them, with intention and care, to the things that matter most.
Are you spending your most precious resource, your time, on things that matter most?
